1. Don't wear nail polish all the time. Wearing nail polish every day actually stains your nails and causes your nails to turn yellow! To prevent the discolouring, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with a half teaspoon of olive oil and a little lemon juice. Rub the mixture into your nails and leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing it off. Your nails will look super clean! It's also good idea to take a polish break every few weeks to limit stains.
2. Don't cut your cuticles. Hang nails are often caused by the overcutting of cuticles. Use cuticle oil to help keep them healthy and hydrated.
3. Don't use acetone nail polish remover. Acetone strips away your nails’ natural oils, leaving them dry and more prone to breakage. Avoid acetone formulas at all costs.
4. Don't pick at chipped polish. When your polish chips, a layer of your nails also chips away! When your mani starts to come undone don’t chip! Just take off the whole layer. Hot tip: avoid chips all together by applying a topcoat every time you polish.
5. Don't skip the base coat. Fill in the ridges of your nails by applying a base coat, this will help to even out the nail. Be proactive and try one with calcium to help strengthen your nails.
6. Don't forget to moisturise your nails. Nails are made up of a protein called keratin, which needs moisture for healthy growth. Slather heavy cream on your hands and feet before bed. Wear socks and gloves to lock in moisture for maximum healing.
7. Don't cut your nails just anytime. Your nails are softer and less likely to break when you get out of the shower. Plan ahead.
8. Don't file the surface of your nail. It will thin them out. Use a buffer on the surface, and a nail file[JG1] along the edges. Correct technique goes a long way.
9. Don't use alcohol-based hand soap. Alcohol-based hand sanitisers are one of the top causes for dry, brittle nails. Stick to hand soaps that are free of harsh chemicals and remember to moisturise your hands every time you wash them.
10. Don't "seesaw" your nails. File only in one direction to avoid splitting the nail bed.
